What are Baby Food?
Baby food is a sensitive issue. Breast milk is the most natural food for a newborn baby. But sometimes breastfeeding doesn’t work out the way it should. This is where baby food comes in. Baby foods are non-breastmilk foods specially formulated for babies of at least 5 months old. They are legally regulated and there are age and health considerations. The food that is most similar to breast milk is called pre-food. It is based on both the ingredients and the consistency.
Why Should You Buy a Good Baby Food?
As a parent, you only want the best for your child. For whatever reason, some mothers may or may not want to breastfeed their newborn. Good, nutritious, baby foods are a good complement to breastmilk.
How to Choose the Best Baby Food?
If you’re set to switch up your baby’s regular breastmilk, there are two options available for you. These include the pre-food and the follow-on foods:
- Pre-foods or stage 1 baby foods: The pre-food is relatively fluid and thin. As your baby gets older, breastmilk may be insufficient. This usually happens between the 4th and 6th month of life. These are usually infant formulas and can be referred to as stage 1 baby foods.
- Follow-on milk: After some months of breastfeeding and stage 1 foods, then you can switch to follow-on milk or give more pre-food. The follow-on milk, also called stage 2 baby food, is roughly the same as the initial milk. However, there are about 2% gluten-free starch added. Mostly corn starch is used for this. It makes the baby milk a little thicker and creamier. Your baby will be satiated longer.
What Features Should You Consider When Buying a Baby Food?
Some criteria must be considered when choosing baby food:
- Hypoallergenic ingredients: Some newborns can tolerate almost all types of powdered milk. Other parents, on the other hand, have to try out many different ones. If your child has an allergy or is classified as being at risk of allergies, it makes sense to choose foods that are known as HA Stage PRE. The allergens in these are largely eliminated. You can tell when your newborn cannot tolerate the baby food when he spits more often or screams often because of stomach pain.
- Table sugar content: Some follow-on milk may contain up to 20% table sugar. You should avoid these. Most manufacturers also do without this, however. This follow-on milk can easily lead to overfeeding. Some manufacturers also use sugar sucrose in follow-on milk. However, this is unnecessary for the nutrient supply and also increases the risk of overfeeding.
- Ease of dissolving: A baby food that dissolves quickly can accelerate the processing. Again, it is advisable to try out different brands and manufacturers. Lump-free food is also more pleasant for your newborn to drink and does not clog the hole in the teat.
- For babies with cow milk allergies: If your baby has a cow’s milk allergy, for the risk of allergies to not unnecessarily increase, the HA PRE-food is composed differently than the normal starting milk. The allergens are greatly reduced in them. This baby milk also contains milk protein. But in contrast to normal pre-food, the proteins are broken down into smaller pieces. Your child’s gastrointestinal tract does not recognize these small fractions as foreign protein components. This prevents the allergy to cow’s milk protein.
